Minita Sanghvi, the Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner, has announced her candidacy for the 44th State Senate District in New York’s Capital Region. She plans to challenge Republican Jim Tedisco for the seat. The district includes Saratoga County, Niskayuna, and the city of Schenectady. Sanghvi, a Democrat, believes that the region deserves better and that it needs a leader who will prioritize the needs of the people over partisan politics. Despite being a public servant, Sanghvi emphasizes that she is not a politician.

Sanghvi was born in India to a conservative family of entrepreneurs and innovators. She earned a degree in accounting and an MBA before immigrating to the United States in 2001. Sanghvi has been teaching business at Skidmore College for almost a decade. In 2021, she was elected as the Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner and was re-elected for a second two-year term last November.

It is currently unclear how and when Sanghvi’s seat at the City Council will be affected if she is elected to the State Senate. State Senate Elections will take place in November 2024, while Sanghvi’s term as Finance Commissioner lasts through 2025.

The 44th State Senate District has approximately 226,000 active registered voters, with a slight majority of Democrats over Republicans. Sanghvi’s campaign priorities include securing infrastructure funding for bridges and roads, increasing state aid to counties and cities, revitalizing downtown areas, attracting green and high-tech jobs, and establishing an “innovation corridor” connecting Schenectady and Saratoga.

If elected, Sanghvi will make history as the first openly gay and first woman of color to represent the 44th State Senate District. She is committed to protecting rights and freedoms for all residents, regardless of their political affiliation. Sanghvi vows to defend LGBTQ rights, ensure women’s access to healthcare, and promote equal opportunities for everyone.
